10 Low Point Weight Watchers Freestyle Snacks

September 30, 2018

When you first start the Weight Watchers program, one of your first thoughts might be "how do I snack?" I know it was one of my first thoughts- I love snacking! If it's your first time keeping track of what foods you are eating, you may be surprised to see that some of the things you may consider "healthy" are higher in points. This was a hard transition for us. We love peanut butter, but it's no longer something I use in a snack due to how many points it has- it's more of a treat these days.

The truth is- it gets easier and if you make sure you are prepared, you can still enjoy snacks. We keep our fridge + pantry stocked with these snacks. It's so important to keep low point snacks on hand, because non-low point snacking can put you into a point predicament.

1. Bean and Corn Salad / 0 points- I (Casey) eat this snack almost every day. It has saved me on so many occasions. When you are hungry but don't have any points left, this recipe is here for you. The best part is that it's filling. Check out the recipe here.

2. Babybel Light Cheese/ 1 point each

3. Dill Pickles / 0 points

4. Any Fruit / 0 points- Our staple fruits are apple, bananas, and strawberries. Every now and then we will get a pineapple or use frozen mango or blueberries for overnight oats.

5. Premiere Protein Shake / 2 points each- These come in a lot of flavors and my favorite is vanilla. We just discovered the Muscle Milk 100 calorie Non-Dairy Vanilla Creme Shakes and they are actually only 1 point and tastes really similar to the Premiere Protein ones! But we will buy whichever one is available at the store when we are there.

6. Boiled Eggs / 0 points

7. Pretzels / Rold Gold regular twists are 3 points for 18 pretzels. When you need something crunchy + salty this is great to have.

8. Air-popped Popcorn / 1 point per cup- This is Savannah's favorite snack and I always end up eating some of hers. While this isn't the most filling snack sometimes you just need popcorn. The easiest way to make it is to use an air-pop machine because you don't have to use an oil at all. You can just top the popcorn with salt.

9. Greek Yogurt / 0 points- Mix this with a little vanilla, no calorie sweetener (I prefer Truvia), and fresh fruit. There's also something called Agave Five which is only 5 calories and 0 points if you only use a tsp.

    The Easiest Taco Soup Recipe

The Nashville weather has finally decided to accept that it's fall. We had a few 96 degree September days, so we were getting a little impatient for cooler temperatures. With the cooler weather here, we start to get into to soup mode. So today we have a delicious taco soup recipe. What's so great about this recipe is that it's only 1 point for a cup, and it's the perfect dish to meal prep + freeze.

This one of those recipes that no one will know is WW friendly. Fortunately for us, a lot of the ingredients are zero points already. The biggest contributor to points is the ground beef, but you can save yourself a lot of points buy getting the leanest beef you can find.

      The Easiest Taco Soup Recipe
Makes 16- 1 cup servings (1 WW Freestyle point)

      Ingredients:
      Olive Oil Spray
1 lb. Extra Lean (95%) Ground Beef
      1 Ranch Dip Mix Packet
      1 Taco Seasoning Packet
1 Can Black Beans, drained and rinsed
1 Can Pinto Beans, drained and rinsed
1 Can Corn, drained and rinsed
      4 Cups Chicken Broth

      Topping Options:
      Fritos
      Plain Non-fat Greek Yogurt
      Shredded 2% Cheddar Cheese

      Directions:
1.Spray a non-stick skillet with olive oil spray.
      2. Brown the ground beef over medium-high heat.
      3. Drain the fat off the beef, if necessary, and add the beef back to the pan.
      4. Add both seasoning packets and mix together.
      5. Add all beans, the corn, and the chicken broth.
      6. Bring to a boil and then lower to simmer for about 30 minutes

This soup comes to 1 WW Freestyle point per cup!

We like to add a little cheese, Fritos, and greek yogurt, but you can totally eat it without those extra toppings. Those extra toppings except the yogurt do add points, but that crunch of the Fritos is worth it to me. Plus you are only using 1-2 points for the actual soup, so even with Fritos you are looking at a low point dinner.

Also how cute are the mugs we got at Hobby Lobby?! You can get some similar ones here. What is your essentially fall soup recipe? The Best Zero Point Side: Mexican Black Bean and Corn Salad

I came up with this recipe out of pure desperation. I was starving. I didn't have any points left for the day. We needed groceries. Sometimes desperate situations lead to the best ideas. We had canned corn, black beans, salsa, and greek yogurt. Somehow my brain thought to put those things together. Thank you, brain.

I eat this nearly every day. Fun fact about me: I don't need a lot of food variety in my life. I could eat the same exact thing every day for six months before ever tiring of it. Savannah can barely tolerate left overs. Regardless of how often you'll make + eat this recipe, it is one to keep in your mind.

This past 4th of July we had a party at our house and we knew we had to make some Weight Watcher friendly sides for ourselves or we were going to be in trouble. I made a big batch of this black bean + corn salad and it was a huge hit. People even asked me for the recipe! That is the perfect WW recipe- one that is zero points AND you can serve to your non-WW friends + family and they will love it as much as you do.

Mexican Black Bean and Corn Salad Recipe
      Ingredients:
1 can black beans, drained + rinsed
      1 can corn, drained
1/2 c salsa (no sugar added)
      2 T non-fat Greek yogurt
      Salt

      Directions:
      1. Pour the beans + corn into a bowl.
      2. Then add salt and mix it well.
      3. Add salsa + greek yogurt. Mix.
      4. Serve immediately or store in an air-tight container for up to 4 days.

I like to eat this cold but you could eat it hot. I would just heat all the ingredients except the greek yogurt, and add that last.

You can add chicken to this as well. You could add this with rice + chicken in a tortilla. You could put it on lettuce. I have used this in a million different ways. But I mostly eat it just as it is as a snack or a side to a meal. It's great when you are hungry and don't have any points left or don't want to use points. Or just because you love it!

The Best Zero Point Ranch Dip

I remember the first time a friend of mine tried homemade ranch dip. Somehow she had gone through her entire life without having this deliciousness. Ranch dip is a staple for party food, but it's also a great addition to a lot of things- like pizza. When we started WW this was one of the first things we converted to a WW friendly recipe. Except it aint even right calling it a recipe because it's two ingredients.

And this homemade ranch dip is going to be a million times better than any low-fat ranch dressing you can buy. This only takes a second to make and it's worth that time.

This dip can be thinned out with a little vinegar to make it more of a dressing. I do that when we eat take out Greek food. It's little things like that can save you a lot of points when eating out.
Okay let's get to the recipe. You're gonna laugh because it's not much of a recipe.

        Ingredients:
        - 16 oz. Plain Non-fat Greek Yogurt
        - 1 Ranch Dip Mix Packet

        Directions:
        1. Add the ingredients to a bowl and mix.
        2. Store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days, if it lasts that long!

And that's it! Are you a ranch lover? If you are, what is your favorite to eat it with? I hope you are as happy as I am that a WW ranch recipe exists. It's the simple things like this that get you through.
